mainoksia (noun) –
Mainoksia is the partitive plural of mainos, meaning advertisement.
The sign in today’s entry is seen in one form or another above just about every Finnish mail slot. It reads simply, ”No ads, please” or ”No junk mail.” It doesn’t work. It still seems to come. 🙂
Mainos is used in the partitive in today’s example because it refers to an indefinite amount. Here’s a good list of occasions on which to use the partitive.
Extra credit: the word mainos was coined in a magazine contest as a replacement for the dated word reklaami.
