Verb (type 1): to mushroom, to gather or hunt mushrooms.
Since mushroom gathering is such a common activity in Finland, it has its own verb!
Sienestää is a captative verb (a verb that indicates catching or hunting something) derived from the noun sieni (“mushroom”) + –stää, the back vowel variant of the suffix used to form captative verbs in Finnish.
A few other captative verbs:
- kala (“fish”) → kalastaa (“to fish”)
- metsä (“forest”) → metsästää (“to hunt”)
- marja (“berry”) → marjastaa (“to pick berries”)
